Zenith Pilot: Vintage VS Modern

Zenith’s PILOT collection underwent a major refresh in 2023. Compared to its predecessors, the new PILOT timepiece represents a radical, comprehensive overhaul—a complete transformation. It has abandoned the vintage aesthetic previously rooted in the "Type 20" design, adopting instead a more modern and sporty case profile to align with contemporary tastes and trends. However, some enthusiasts argue that the "Type 20" style remains the true "orthodox" identity of Zenith’s Pilot series.

The "old model" adopts a vintage aesthetic modeled after the historic TYPE 20 reference. It faithfully preserves the original's quintessential features, such as the onion crown, cathedral hands, and luminous Arabic numeral indices. The TYPE 20 originated as a standard-issue timepiece for the French Air Force; numerous brands—including Zenith, Breguet, AIRAIN, and Mathey-Tissot—have historically fulfilled orders for this specific model. In addition to chronographs that remain true to the original lineage, Zenith also introduced a three-hand variant. The series features cases crafted from a variety of materials, with sizes ranging from 40mm to 45mm. However, with the recent stylistic shift in Zenith's new PILOT collection, Breguet now stands as the sole brand still dedicated to the revival of the TYPE 20 legacy.

The vintage-style Zenith "Big Pilot" features luminous "cathedral hands" and a pristine dial devoid of a date window; the word "PILOT" is printed at the 6 o'clock position, lending the timepiece a distinctly retro appearance. As early as 1888, Zenith registered the French word "Pilote" as a trademark, followed by the registration of the English term "Pilot" in 1904. Consequently, the inclusion of the "PILOT" inscription on the dial remains one of the defining characteristics of Zenith's pilot watches.

The aesthetic of the new pilot's watch draws, to some extent, upon the design cues of luxury sports watches. Its case and lugs are seamlessly integrated, while the bezel features a vertical brushed finish; the timepiece is presented in a moderate 40.5mm case diameter. In terms of details, the dial features a horizontal textured pattern, and the date window is positioned at the 6 o'clock mark. Reflecting this stylistic shift, the hands have also been redesigned with a more modern profile. As the latest addition to the El Primero family, this movement has been stripped of its chronograph module; while retaining the signature high frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, it now offers an extended power reserve of 60 hours.
